J MAR’s client, an established upstream oil and gas operator, is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting function across its multiple entities. The Controller will manage an accounting team and partner closely with leadership to deliver timely, accurate financial information that supports strategic decision-making. This role ensures compliance with regulatory and external reporting requirements while continually evaluating processes, software, and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and scale with company growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting Operations & General Ledger
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including general ledger integrity across operating entities and affiliated entities.
- Ensure accurate and complete account reconciliations to identify and resolve potential errors or concerns.
- Review intercompany and equity transactions to ensure proper recording and elimination.
- Oversee complex annual calculations including Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO), Depreciation, Depletion & Amortization (DD&A), and Impairment.
- Safeguard company assets through the design, implementation, and monitoring of strong internal controls.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Deliver timely and accurate quarterly financial reports required under various agreements.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly internal financial reports for the management team.
- Oversee monthly internal Lease Operating Statement (LOS) reporting to leadership.
- Manage monthly and quarterly production and sales reporting for federal, state, and other agencies.
- Oversee periodic state escheat (unclaimed property) reporting.
Audit & Tax Coordination
- Coordinate and lead the quarterly review and annual third-party financial statement audit.
- Work with third-party tax preparers to compile data required for timely and accurate federal and state tax filings.
Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, ensuring staff have the tools, training, and support needed to perform at a high level.
- Collaborate with the engineering department to maintain alignment between reserve report records and accounting records.
- Partner with the land department to maintain alignment between division order records and accounting records.
- Continually reassess accounting processes, software solutions, and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and accommodate growth.
- Complete research and special projects as requested by senior management.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- Active CPA license.
- Strong understanding of GAAP basis financial reports.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably a mix of public accounting and industry.
- Upstream oil and gas accounting experience, with working knowledge of ARO, DD&A, Impairment, and reserve-based reporting.
- Prior experience managing and developing an accounting team.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and complex formulas, with the ability to manage and analyze large datasets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, land, and operations teams.
